Edinburgh Express: What To See & Do In 48 Hours (Pt. 2)

Edinburgh Express - A City Guide of What To See & Do In 48 Hours

______________

Rested and ready? Excellent. Despair not at the impending end of your Edinburgh trip for there's time still to see many of the city's sights including another hilly ascent, shopping, restaurants and pubs, and then some.  If you were astute enough to time your flight/train back for the afternoon, you'll even have ample time for wildlife-spotting before the end of your city break. Incroyable, no? I mean business when I say 'Edinburgh Express'.
So strap on your boots, grab that camera, bag some pipes, and let's get crackin'...

24 Hours in Kuala Lumpur - What & Where to See, Eat, & Do

24 HOURS IN KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA -
WHAT & WHERE TO SEE, EAT, & DO

They said it couldn’t be done. That nobody could hit the ground running, straight off an overnight flight from Sydney to Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, and visit all the stops on my itinerary in less than a day; what with the infamous tropical humidity, heat, and the city’s notorious traffic to contend with. Well clearly they underestimate my determination to show a good friend (who finally took up my offer to visit me in Malaysia, since, like, forever) a much needed change of scenery and a whistle stop tour of the city I grew up in, as well as the prowess of my legendary travel planning. I’m not nicknamed YipAdvisor for nothing. Should you also find yourself in Kuala Lumpur for just a day, fret not - Luxy and I have done the footwork for you. Here is my itinerary for 24 Hours in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; with the added bonuses of what else we would have done had we not had other social engagements (Chinese New Year reunion dinner, I’m looking at you) as well as more Kuala Lumpur guides from other travel bloggers.

Edinburgh Express - A City Guide of What To See & Do In 48 Hours

EXPERIENCE EDINBURGH IN 48 HOURS

_________

Scotland may seem like a landscape of mountains and magic - monsters in the Lochs and Hogwarts castle, for starts - but don't let the mystique surrounding the country intimidate you. Unless you're heading for the Highlands - in which case, pack your walking stick, hip flask, and buddy up with Hagrid. Scotland's cities are very much accessible by foot and their sights easily reached even for prissy urbanites such as yours truly. Case in point: Edinburgh. Though Scotland's capital may be built on different levels - giving this UNESCO site the dreamy appearance of a floating city of clouds - I managed to visit most of Edinburgh's great attractions in just over two days, with little difficulty. That said, all the hill-ascending, close-climbing, and stair-stomping does burn off a great deal of calories - all the better to stuff one's haggis hole with no post-holiday overindulgence-regret-self-flagellation.

So now you know, there really is no excuse for you to ignore Edinburgh if you are in the immediate vicinity of, um, Europe, especially if - like I am - you're based in London. Getting to Edinburgh has never been easier what with direct trains from Platform 9¾ Kings Cross, although it's actually cheaper to fly there via Easyjet or Ryanair. Either way, you've no reason not to pack your bags and haul ass to Edinburgh for at least a city break, not when I've laid out a guide to seeing the sights and stuffing your haggis hole - all of it easily done in 48 hours. Walking shoes at the ready...

Jaipur, India: 24 Hours in the Pink City - What & Where to See, Stay, Eat, & Do

24 HOURS IN JAIPUR, INDIA: WHAT & WHERE TO SEE, STAY, EAT, AND DO

Strictly speaking, I had 4 days in Jaipur - but one was written off for recovering from Bombay, two were chock full of festivities and shenanigans (you know how traditional Indian weddings are like, it’s like Bollywood but bigger and better), which left all of a day to see as many of the Pink City’s highlights as I could. Yet, despite a thousand setbacks thrown at me in the form of mind-boggling inefficiency (Bombay International Airport, I’m looking at you), culture shock (Me, to my taxi driver: “Shouldn’t you unfold your side mirrors before you drive?” Taxi driver:Side mirror use by bad driver only. I good driver. No need use mirror” Me: *screams in British accent*), and sheer bad luck - you know by now how my travel companion couldn’t enter the country, leaving me to travel solo in India? That story is now immortalised in my “Travel BTS (Behind The Scenes) ” Highlights reel on my Instagram @poshbrokebored - I survived my trip to the capital city of Rajasthan and made it back, relatively unscathed, with this guide to 24 Hours in Jaipur

Arty Amsterdam: 5 Must-See Museums

What To See in Amsterdam : Five Museums you Can't Miss including Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, Museum Van Loon, Venustempel Sex Museum, and Red Light Secrets: Museum of Prostitution.
SWOOP IN ON THESE FIVE AMSTERDAM MUSEUMS YOU CAN'T MISS

The four things you must do in Amsterdam is to tiptoe through the tulips at Keukenhof, check in at the uber-hip new W Hotel, enjoy these unexpected and luxurious culinary experiences, and of course soak in the best of Dutch art, design, and culture. From classic to contemporary to downright raunchy, here is my pick of the 5 Must See Museums in Amsterdam. You can easily, like I did, cover all of these in two days. Entry to some of these museums are free or discounted with the I Amsterdam City Card which also offers free unlimited public transport - but with a city this scenic, why not explore on foot?

Hong Kong: How To #DiscoverHongKong in 24 Hours

How & What To See, Eat, and Do in Hong Kong in 24 Hours. #DiscoverHongKong

I wandered aimlessly in and out of the glossy boutiques - paying special attention to local designers like Shanghai Tang - rolling my Tumi cabin bag across the polished marble floors of upscale shopping centre Elements where the Airport Express had deposited me: right in the belly of the beast, so to speak. Despite having to wait the better part of 6 hours for Luxy to arrive I was in an unusually chipper mood - I wasn’t even offended that whenever I spoke Cantonese I was replied to in English, but just how ‘white’ is my accent?! - until I was hit with the realisation we would have only one full day in Hong Kong but we had a to-do list to rival the Labours of Hercules. And yet; despite having time, distance, and a serious shortage of *ahem* honest taxi drivers against us, Luxy and I took on the Fragrant Harbour and WON. Behold our victory, that it may someday pave your hurried but not harried way: this is how you do HONG KONG IN 24 HOURS.

Busan, South Korea: What to See in Winter

Beyond the sea: What to See in Winter in Busan, South Korea by Posh, Broke, & Bored

THERE’S MORE TO BUSAN, SOUTH KOREA, THAN ITS
BEACHES, AS I FOUND OUT ON A COLD WINTER’S DAY...

Busan has been lauded as South Korea’s answer to Barcelona: a coastal town with a wide beach and more urban edge than its glossy inland cousin. Beyond its seaside charms, South Korea’s second largest city would have you know that you are in ‘Dynamic Busan, City of Tomorrow’. They’re not wrong. Some parts of Busan, especially downtown, rival the modernity in Seoul, if not outstrip it’s braggadociousness (braggadocity?). I’m talking about you, We’ve The Zenith - I’m not sure what this so-called zenith is, unless it’s a reference to being the tallest residential building in the world. Busan wants to talk about its vision for the future, while visitors think of its coastal charms (seven, count ‘em, seven beach districts). Both are very worthy reasons to visit. But of my brief sojourn in Busan, two things stood out the most to me; one of which was a pristine relic of its past, the other a exemplary case of urban regeneration done right. There is more to Busan than its beaches, as you’ll see (sea?)...

SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA: HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF A SHORT STAY (AND HOW DO IT IN STYLE AND CONSCIENCE, TOO!)

Now, I’m all for slow-living and taking it nice and easy (as the glacial pace I take to respond to Whatsapp messages will attest to) but sometimes, time is a luxury that money just can’t buy. What’s a girl to do, eh? That’s no excuse to dive into a whirlwind tour of a city unprepared. Luckily, I live life in the fast lane and do the research beforehand so others don’t have to. If you’re planning a short (3 or so days) trip to Siem Reap and don’t want to scrimp on comfort or culture, keep reading my guide on Where to stay, What to eat, What to see, What to do and most importantly, What NOT to do.

...because what else is there to do when one finds themselves on a cliff, overlooking the marine park island of Redang with sweeping views of the South China Sea, beaches, and mountains?

What need is there to leave your villa, when it comes with everything you could need; your own gym, sixteen metre infinity pool, vast wraparound sun deck and numerous balconies, your own staff to cater to your every whim, need, and desire, your butler to bring you the local delicacies and your chef to whip them up into supper for you?

My Perfumes & the Travels They Evoke

My perfume collection and the travels that they bring to mind. An olfactory journey to Russia, Italy, Cuba, Vietnam, South Korea, France, and Malaysia. Starring Chanel Cuir de Russie, Tom Ford Neroli Portofino, Creed Virgin Island Water, Tom Ford Champaca Absolute, Dior Leather Oud, Chanel No 5 Eau Premiere, and Tom Ford Jasmin Rouge.

What a suggestive force smell is. It's this sense with all its Pavlovian powers that makes me want to instantly disrobe and lie face down in anticipation of a massage whenever I catch the spa-like whiff of lemongrass (which is why I should probably avoid Thai restaurants). It's why amortentia - the most powerful love potion in the wizarding world - smells to each person of their favourite things. Mine would be: the seats of a new car, fresh paint, and vanilla ice-cream OMG am I pregnant?! Scent leads us down forgotten paths of memories old and transports us to places we'd rather be. This same aspirational quality is why the head honchos of the fragrance industry are probably cackling all the way to the bank in a perfume cloud of Justin Bieber 'Someday' and 'Girlfriend'. Muahahahaha.
In the theme of this month's travel blogger linkup I thought I'd share with you my collection of fragrances and the journeys to faraway lands that they bring to my mind.

Going Native: Kerachut beach and Monkey beach, Penang

What sets 'best friends' apart from 'good friends' is that best friends love you despite and for all your flaws, the ones that make you absolutely intolerable to everyone else but yet are a source of endearment (and frustration) to them. While a normal friend would smile politely through the pain, a best friend plays your game and beats you at it. Like Sheena-chan for example! Last week I stayed with her and David in Penang, and without Michiekins to help her manage me, Sheena had to devise a way to keep me under control. Her exact words were: "Oh God...Jasiminne is well rested and didn't bring her iPad, her Mac, or a book...she's going to be a handful. I know! We'll take her to the beach and let her run around to exhaust herself!" You know how the best way to stop a bored, hyperactive puppy from destroying your house is to take it for a long walk so that it sleeps like an angel when it gets home? Same theory.

There is quite literally a danger in paradise. If I thought that nearly drowning in Plitvice Lakes National Park, having a dress zipper split in Split (of course), and breaking my suitcase as well as losing my favourite hat in Dubrovnik were the end of my mishaps on this trip I had another thing coming. 😫  It was the penultimate day of my 20 Days in 20 Cities and 6 Countries road trip, and naturally the Gods of Misfortune had saved the best for (almost) last.
