Transylvanian Christmas: Dracula's Castle, Bran, Romania

On our final day in Transylvania Henry and I set out to 'Dracula's Castle' in Bran to separate myth from man: Bram Stoker's Dracula versus Vlad the Impaler. The stakes *hehe* were high---we were cutting it fine if we were to catch our flight back to London from Bucharest---but we were more than determined to sink our teeth *ha* into this last endeavour of ours, the final nail in the coffin *huhu* in our tour of Romania, so to speak. How could I ever look myself in the mirror *chortle* again if I went all the way to Transylvania without visiting Bran Castle, commonly known as Dracula's Castle?

'The Idealistic Wanderluster' - What's Your Travel Personality?

Bay of Kotor, Montenegro - Posh, Broke, & Bored

Greetings from Helsinki! I'm in Europe's hipster capital with Henry taking up where I left off with my 2015 resolution to travel to a new country each month. Today I ask: 'What's Your Travel Personality?' - a most timely query posed by this month's travel linkup (hosted by Luxy of Lux Life Blog)

Interiors: Winter nest: My bedroom for winter, completed!

...aaaaaand I've finally finished updating my bedroom for winter!

There's nothing quite as invigorating like a fresh lick of paint to bring some colour to your life or in my case remove the awful colour from my walls. The 'Malayan tapir' (half black, half white) wall in my bedroom that ocularly offended my eyeballs for the past four years has finally been whitewashed into a thing of pure, glacial beauty. Behold the frosty cleanliness Crown Breatheasy 'Brilliant White' has bestowed upon these walls in all its icy, matte splendour. You know me, I'm no minimalist---if my walls don't resemble an orgy in a crayon box than those colours aren't for me---but I think that in this instance I'm alright with all-white.

Made In Romania

It's funny isn't it, how people can bond over the most unusual things? At first I danced up a storm with Kate and Hannah the night they wore candy bras to a themed party at Tonteria...and then we bonded over our love of rice. Not just plain rice, or steamed rice, or even fried rice...a special kind of, ummm, 'love spell' rice. Their people (Romanians) and my people (Malaysians) more or less use the same rice recipe to magically ensnare men. And so, with our love for spells, folklore, superstition, ridiculous food puns, and laughing at our own cultural stereotypes (K&H unabashedly embrace being 'Romanian gypsies') the Nasi Kangkang gang was born.

For Kate's birthday portrait I just had to depict her as my version of a Romanian gypsy cum fortune teller cum spell maker...crystal ball, headscarfs, hoops, sinister glint in the eye and all.

Destination: Riga, Latvia

Labdien (hello) from Latvia! Perchance you may have seen on my Instagram (@jasiminne) that I'm in Riga, Latvia. Dear friends, I write to you now from the comfort of luxury boutique hotel Gallery Park Hotel ensconced in the warm enriching glow of an eight hour nap followed by a spellbinding evening of ballet - Swan Lake at the Latvian National Opera - and a satisfyingly heavy meal which Henry and I (tried but failed to) walk off with a stroll through the park. Everything is covered in a blanket of snow and the city looks just like a postcard of the ultimate fantasy of what a European city should look like (but without the crowds, the chaos, and the urban grime of say, Paris).

Christmas

This year was a little bit different from the last. Whereas my Christmases in London have always involved the English tradition of eating and drinking all day, watching telly, and sleeping in, this time I woke up at the crack of dawn to volunteer for Crisis At Christmas.

Crisis are 'the national charity for single homeless people' who work very hard to end homelessness by campaigning for change, providing education, employment, housing, healthcare...basically all the things we privileged people take for granted. The shelter, in a confidential London location, welcomes homeless people out of the cold and as guests provide them with a place to sleep, shower, eat, medical treatment and beauty services, among many other things. No one should be cold and hungry on Christmas Day. Many people felt the same way because about 50 people showed up for my shift (8am-4pm). I met a Malaysian girl who studies and lives in Cardiff who came down to London for the day just to volunteer. I love meeting selfless people, it reaffirms my faith in humanity!
