What’s In My Makeup Bag - My 17 Luxury & Drugstore Beauty Essentials

What’s In My Makeup Bag - My 16 Luxury & Drugstore Beauty Essentials
“There are no ugly women, only lazy ones”

‘Ain’t that the truth? You only have to look as far as my ‘morning face’ and compare it with my ‘public face’ to fully appreciate the transformative powers of cosmetics. My close friends jokingly call bare-faced me ‘Maria, Jasiminne’s humble and homely maid’ and love to ask ‘Maria’: “Mana boss kau yang cantik tu?” (Where’s that lovely boss of yours?) to which ‘Maria’ would reply: “Puan sedang sibuk, ma’am. Dia datang sebentar lagi, sila tunggu sekejap. Nak minum apa, ma’am?” (Madam Jasiminne is busy but she will be here presently. Would you like a drink while you wait?) Yeah, I have great friends. *furtive glance*

What's In My Handbag: Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama

I'm a huge fan of Louis Vuitton and especially their collaboration collections. I've shown you my piece from their Christian Louboutin collaboration and one of my handbags from the Yayoi Kusama collection, and on Monday I blogged about my other Yayoi Kusama handbag which I dubbed 'The Ladybird' for its delightful yellow polka-dotted body. Since my last What's In My Handbag post I've updated the contents of my purse with some lovely floral additions for Spring, so I thought I'd do another handbag post and introduce you properly to Ladybird.

What's In My Handbag: Louis Vuitton x Christian Louboutin

I'm a huge fan of Louis Vuitton (how could I not be when they spoil me with gifts and parties?) especially their artist collaborations which not only makes their handbags even more collectible but also distinguishes their limited editions from their basic monogrammed bags. Every special edition this illustrious French luggage label designs is presented ahead of its release in Kuala Lumpur to mummy for her consideration (as Louis Vuitton in K.L only import small numbers of each design for exclusivity reasons).  When the Louis Vuitton x Christian Louboutin collaboration was announced, mummy ordered the shopping tote for our collection. It was only when I got back to K.L in February that I got to finally see our new baby in person, which I'm thrilled to show you together with some of my latest acquisitions, in a What's In My Handbag post...!

I may not yet be worthy of the accolade of 'bag lady' but if there is one thing I love it is a classic handbag with a twist - an artist collaboration.

Dotty Bag Lady - What's In My Handbag

My grey Prada Saffiano is one of my personal classics. I've seen handbags---designer, high-street, vintage---come and go through the figurative revolving doors of my wardrobe. In fact, at any given time only less than 20 out of 50 or so handbags remain in my permanent collection. The rest are either on rotation between mummy and I, or are borrowed from good friends, or destined to be given away much to the delight of my friends. But...! This hero bag, the Saffiano, is very much a fixture in my life. The grey is a classic and versatile colour; glacial in winter, transitional in autumn, unexpected in summer, pale and pretty in spring. The simple and structured shape is ingenious in all its minimality. The many compartments inside are the key to keeping the contents of my purse (all 5kg of it) organised and myself from tipping over into a hysterical breakdown every time I need to fish for lipstick or a business card. Many say that black is a true classic. I don't know if that's true for me. By now you know of the story about how I gave up wearing purple, burgundy, and black when my fortune teller told me that those were my three unlucky colours. Happily dove grey is lucky for me and so are pastels. Now I carry this baby, in a beautiful shade of taupe, on my arm safe in my superstitious mind that the colour will protect me from harm, and if not the colour at least my stupidly heavy handbag will double as an excellent weapon against unsolicited amorous gestures. x

What's In My Bag; Taupe and Mint.

Of all the many small victories that enrich my life (end of the day slashed prices at Waitrose, shoving my size 7 feet into a 6.5 shoe, shopping on The Outnet, waiting time for an Uber is less than 2 minutes etc.) none is so triumphant as pulling together a new handbag and refreshing its contents for a new season. Last winter I had an affair with a lady in red, my Sofia Coppola but decided that Spring should be a much more neutral but no less muted affair. I love my mum's taupe Saffiano but had to begrudgingly hand it back to her, so imagine my delight when I found a not entirely dissimilar version by H&M! Cheap as chips too, at £35. Of course for that price I could easily buy a knock-off Prada Saffiano but you know what my thoughts are on that. So whatever I saved from buying H&M instead of Hermes I allowed myself to spend on changing the contents of my purse, from wallet to iPad case to *ahem* a new camera.

My new work bag for Spring. As well as everything in the picture above I also managed to squeeze in my macbook, my macbook charger, my travel documents, a jumper, and a few magazines. Lugged it all onto my flight back to Kuala Lumpur and surprise surprise, it fit in my seat's side compartment (beneath the window)! Impressed.

かげほしのバッグスワグ [ 漫画家·エディション ]

Literally---Kagehoshi's Bag Swag [Cartoonist Edition].

Yes, Kagehoshi (Japanese for Star Shadow) is/was the pseudonym I gave myself when I first started drawing comics. Laugh away, I bear no shame for the affectations of 13 year old me. Nande? Back then manga was all the rage in Malaysia, and it was cool to have a Japanese nickname. When I think of my manga obsession, the stupid amounts of money I spent on tankobon (the original Japanese versions mind you) and then Japanese language classes so I could read the tankobon I bought...and as for the bits I couldn't read on my own, I'd bring up the fan-translated English transcripts on the internet...I faint. I still pride myself on my complete collection of 3x3 Eyes manga, all 32 (or 33?) volumes of it. In mint condition. Japanese edition. I have a warped idea of what achievement is.

Demo! I have much to thank manga for, it has influenced my drawing style and shaped my drawing skills. Teaching myself to draw comics by copying my favourite artist's styles and eventually evolving into my own, from the age of 13-20...that's some form of dedication, right?

I dropped the name Kagehoshi, and expanded my comic intake to include Western graphic novels and manhwa (both Korean & Chinese). My illustration style reflects this eclectic mix of influences, as does the contents of my work handbag and choice of accessories.

Graphic novel inspiration du jour: The Vesuvius Club (written AND graphic novel edition)

I can be infamously lazy---ie. not bothering to use any of my many skincare products---but when it comes to dressing the part, I am certain to make my accessories match my job. Wait...am I an illustrator or cartoonist? All will be clear, soon.

I love The Vesuvius Club, the sardonic wit, delicious decadence, and unabashed muchness is all I ever hope to convey in my writing and drawing. And that Lucifer Box is a dashing, bisexual, Edwardian-era portraitist slash England's sexiest secret agent...it's not so much wanting to be with him, but wanting to actually be him

おまけ (EXTRA) !

I found my Sailormoon cards!

Now if only I can find my Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon trading cards, then all will be right in my world.

What's In My Bag; White & Gold

Louis Vuitton handbag // Chanel wallet // Chanel Poudre Universelle Compact (clair) // Chanel No.5 Eau Premiere purse spray // Chanel Rouge Allure lipgloss (No.68 Troublant) // La Mer the body creme // (fake) Beats by Dre // Leica D-Lux 5 Titanium // iPhone 5 // sketchbook from Kaison // white jade bangle // SmartCigs e-cigarette (menthol)

As the clocks move forward and the days become longer, likewise the new season calls for a lighter approach to accessorising. Why save white for summer, when all winter we've been deprived of brightness? Half-hearted semi-melted snow in the city does not count.

White & gold; my self-declared lucky colours for Spring. With of course touches of black here & there (lifelong habits take time to shed), and shades of grey & mint green.

If only I could spring clean & declutter my life as easily as I did with my handbag.

I got back to London this morning at 6 and have been unpacking all morning. Who knew that sorting and tidying a tiny apartment could be so tiring? Time for a power nap. Thank goodness it's a Bank Holiday! Not that it's relevant to us freelancing types, but any excuse to feel less bad about not doing any work today...!

xx
