Apocalypse: Guirado Design AW14 / Pure Evil : The Nightmare Series

Apocalypse...nightmare...how uncanny that I would go to two art shows of a similarly macabre nature  in London within a week of each other, and quite amusing that they should both occur in the very week I stop having nightmares, instead having the soundest sleep I've had in three years. I can't decide if it's because I've been too busy and exhausted to have dreams, or because I've replaced my mattress, but there you go.

Apocalypse: Guirado Design AW14

With Scott Temple, Victoria Cassagnaud, and Dan Alexis at Apocalypse: Guirado Design AW14 Showcase in association with Art & Music: The Saatchi Gallery Magazine at Cock & Bull Gallery, downstairs in Mark Hix's Tramshed.

LONDON FASHION WEEK FALL 2014: DAY 5: THE STREETS ARE PAVED WITH GOLD

Designers have been looking to the street for inspiration especially of late, given the explosion of street style blogs and fashion bloggers-turned-front row regulars. Having lived and worked in Shoreditch for the past 5 years, I've seen homegrown talent and DIY trends (it's incredible what one can do with a handful of studs from eBay and some thrifted leather) slowly trickle their way upwards into the catwalk and then into the mainstream. The club kids, fashion stylists, and young creatives of East London have firmly established their place in high fashion, bringing the electric energy of the streets of Shoreditch to the runways at London Fashion Week.

LONDON FASHION WEEK FALL 2014: DAY 4: FLORA & FAUNA

From my review of Day 4 of LFW Fall 2013 for Tresor Paris Blog. As you can tell from my colourful description and the way I let my imagination run while, I am rather besotted by Burberry Prorsum and Giles Deacon.
Every fashion label keen to revisit that classic spring theme of flora and fauna runs the risk of Miranda Priestly-esque ire: "Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking" (likewise, so does anybody making a Devil Wears Prada reference in a fashion week review. Meta).  But Burberry Prorsum and Giles Deacon have nothing to fear, for their invigorating use of nature's design this season is every bit as fresh as the living things they are inspired by.

URiBE

If one were to look past the posturing, preening, and 'to see and to be seen' element of fashion week parties one would see that at the heart of it it's really about meeting like-minded people and supporting the creative endeavours of acquaintances and friends alike. With that kind of intimacy in mind Diana and I popped into The London Edition yesterday evening to admire and appreciate the efforts of URiBE.

Don't Sion and Tiffany look every inch the Californian power couple? Together they have such a presence, a sense of seamless unity, and the kind of harmony that many people can only dream of having with their partner let alone one they work with.
"URiBE is a London based fashion jewellery label led by design duo Sion & Tiffany Phillips.
With a strong foundation in design and fashion, URiBE is defined by their unique backgrounds, heritage, and travel. Tiffany and Sion’s Chilean-American and Welsh roots, respectively, shine through in the inspiration of the line.
Tiffany has spent the last ten years collaborating in accessories design at Lagerfeld’s Chanel, Maison Michel, Opening Ceremony’s Kenzo, Loewe and Atelier Swarovski, among others, while Sion has worked on branding, design, and advertising concepts for clients such as Stella Artois, Nike, and BMW."

LONDON FASHION WEEK FALL 2014: DAY 3: COMFORTABLE CONTRASTS

An excerpt from my review of London Fashion Week Fall Ready To Wear Day 3 for Tresor Paris:

The overall impression of the looks sent out on the runway yesterday was one of contrasts. Boxy, structured lines juxtaposed against soft, slouchy, curves, sometimes even within the same look. This mood of contrast was even more apparent at Topshop Unique.

Oversized coats threatened to slip off the models, seemingly held on only by belts. The largeness of it all provided a silhouette of contrasts; while the shoulders, lapels, and sleeves were undeniably chunky, the almost undulating flow of the coats were those of the joys that only those who buy outerwear several sizes larger will know (yours truly included, there is nothing so ridiculously comfortable in winter as size 16 coat on a size 8 frame).

London Fashion Week Fall 2014: Day 2: Prints Charming and the Demimonde

The unthinkable has happened---I've been asked to guest blog about London Fashion Week. You can read my full blog post about yesterday, Day 2 of London Fashion Week, on the Tresor Paris blog here. Below, an excerpt from my blog post for Tresor Paris, because a) the decadent spirit of House Of Holland's la demimonde moderne is so terribly me (or at least I hope so), b) I want everything from that collection! and c) I wrote a review of London Fashion Week! That's a first for me. Anyway, here it is. It's my first shot at writing about fashuuuuun so please be nice to me. Now I really must go and shop the House of Holland Fall RTW collection. Credit cards at the ready. x

"Day 2 of London Fashion Week brought us a dose of typical British insouciance and cheek. Along with the high voltage 'Las Vegas' dazzle of Julien Macdonald and the sheer sexiness of J.W Anderson, the unifying theme of the shows du jour seemed to be bold prints and graphics with imagery celebrating the unabashed glamour of the party girl lifestyle.
House of Holland_2
This spirit 'a la demimonde' was especially apparent at House Of Holland. 'HOH harlots' strutted down the catwalk like punk-rock debutantes, opening the show with a T-shirt emblazoned with 'Riche Bish', a nod to the slogan tees that put Henry Holland on the fashion radar years ago.
 House of Holland_1
Sequined champagne flutes, bows, lipsticks, and lobsters adorned black velvet. A feminine yet brazen celebration of all things indulgent.
House of Holland_3House of Holland_4
Even beneath striking quilted bomber jackets embroidered with giant lipsticks, there was no ignoring the saucy Pre-Raphaealite, Marie Antoinette-esque beauties caught in flagrante, naught bits blacked out, on the tabloid covers.
Themes of conspicuous consumption, debauched PYTs, and luxe loungewear married with  sumptuous douppioni silk and fur will guarantee House Of Holland's latest collection a spot on the shopping list of every Posh, Broke (ironically, mais bien sur), & Bored heiress apparent, party girl, and rebellious high-society darlings alike."

Let The Hunger Games Begin

I just couldn't pass up the chance for the pun. Yesterday I went a) straight from a 13 hour flight from Kuala Lumpur (where I slept through 3 out of the 5 courses for dinner, so naturally by the end of it I felt like Katniss foraging, in the rain, through the bakery's bins) to b) the launch of Hunger magazine issue 6 at Rankin's studio to c) kick off London Fashion Week, the ultimate Hunger Games (carbs or couture? pick one, not both).

Kokon To Zai aftershow party

Goodbye fashion week--- sorry, London Collections: Men ---it's been fun.

Ben Sherman VIP party at The London Edition.

I will not pretend that this blog post has any intellectual substance. Rather I embrace the fact that it is merely a vehicle for tipsy, narcissistic, Fashion Week selfies.

I just got home from the Ben Sherman VIP party at The London Edition (where I spend most of my life, second only to Duck & Waffle) and you might be wondering why the need to blog before bedtime photos you took only hours ago? To which I say; blogging should be instant, if I were to wait two-three days before publishing an event I might as well quit the internet and start a print magazine. I'm sure everyone wants to read about a party weeks after it happens. If you're not going to be consistent just stick to print media.

Ada + Nik: AW 14/15 'THE DARK WOLF'

Perplexed by the flurry of slender, black-clad, ambiugously-gendered figures in hats, cape-like coats, leather jackets, and wedged brothel creepers (not necessarily worn in that order) flapping around New Oxford Street like stylish ravens? Don't be. London Collections: Men started yesterday, which would account for the surge of 'fashion people' milling from Somerset House to Tottenham Court Road.

Yesterday I covered Ada + Nik's AW 14/15 'THE DARK WOLF'; from backstage photos, to rehearsals, the show itself, and the after show party for my friend Jay's website The Arcadia.

I'm a special snowflake.

No, not really. If you think about it everyone is a special snowflake which means nobody is special at all. Remember, you are unique...just like everyone else. Yesterday evening was Phoenix magazine's Christmas party at Ruski's and the theme was snow maiden. The invite did say 'The Snow Maiden's Ball'. Rumour was that Josh Kane was going to dress as Cruella deVille, so naturally I panicked to find something to wear that would suit the occasion. I did contemplate tipping a bottle of talcum powder over my head and going as a 'special snowflake'. Or as a cokehead's idea of a 'white Christmas'. But modesty and restrain---yeah right, more like laziness---prevailed and instead I just threw on a few things I already had hanging in my wardrobe.

Bespoke HQ S/S 14 Preview (or Hope the mini dachshund's party)

Yesterday evening Luxy, Nichole, Jimmy, Josh, and I popped down to The Clerkenwell Collection for a preview of Bespoke HQ's S/S 14 collection. What ensued was a medley of whisky tasting, very hot canapes (many of which dropped to the floor and was promptly gobbled up by the resident hoover Hope the dog), serious lust for the Bespoke HQ suits and Bailey Nelson glasses, and oodles of love for Hope. She's a mini dachshund. If regular sized dachshunds are called sausage dogs, then is she a chipolata dog? Food for thought.

PPQ Private Sales Evening

Yesterday evening I coerced---the soft power of gentle persuasion is the way forward---Diana, Nichole, and Josh to come with to the PPQ Private Sales Evening at The Sanderson. Pre-ordering next season dresses at sample sale prices and trying them on in the comfort of a hotel while under the influence of bubbles, that's the way shopping should be.
Lemon and lime; two of your five a day. Be sure to take a bite. Diana and Nichole doing the 'booty pop' in gowns from PPQ S/S '14 'Atropa Bella-donna'.

London Fashion Week SS14: Linda Farrow party

Last Sunday Le Baron hosted the Linda Farrow London Fashion Week party.
And when Tracy Sedino (the lovely lady behind Linda Farrow) throws a party, everyone shows up. You just don't say no.

Asian Invasion...! Moi et Tracy, fellow red lipstick enthusiast. I put on what I thought was a red Chanel lipstick since it was her party, but it turned out to be pink...I guess I need to fix the lighting in my bathroom.

London Fashion Week SS14: PPQ Party

My favourite photo from the night, the beautiful Shingai Shoniwa of The Noisettes being quite literal as she sang Singing In The Rain in the rain. I love how the raindrops illuminated by the camera flashes form a halo around her. Perhaps not 'halo'...more like a sprinkling of stars?
