A day in my Posh, Broke, & Bored life / K.L Edition

Transparency is a wonderful thing. So is context. My blog posts and Instagram pictures are but mere snippets chosen from days that are mostly mundane. These carefully selected moments are curated to form a gallery of images that alludes to an otherwise photogenic, seemingly picture perfect life when in reality my days are really quite boring.

My makeshift workstation because my study table is pilled with storage boxes and every surface of my dressing table is cluttered with junk.

Isn't that typical with social media envy? We forget that people post the best parts of their days, say 1% of what happens to them, but whenever we feel down about ourselves we go on Facebook to compare our disappointments against our friends' pictures of their holiday, acquaintances' latest acquisitions, your favourite 'Instagram celebrity''s artfully composed glass of champagne held up high against the city skyline with the sun setting just above it. In reality that last scene was probably the only glass they've allowed themselves to drink all week because they desperately want to lose five kilos, they probably sat around waiting a good ten minutes before the sunset for the right moment to take that photo, and it took about ten snaps to get the right shot, of which they edited furiously with twelve different apps on their phone so that they could post it to Instagram right away and show everyone what a great time, what a great life they're having...instead of just having it and living it there and then, in the moment.

So yes, it's good to put things in context. All that glitters is not gold. I'm not saying it's a furiously polished turd, I'm just saying it might be gold-plated but someone has conveniently failed to mention so.

With that in mind I thought I'd do a post about a day in my life, in its entirety. Without omitting the mundane parts nor seeking to big up the bits for the benefit of an 'audience', not that I even have one. This is me, keeping it real.

This is the Kuala Lumpur edition. Do bear in mind that the car I drive isn't actually mine, it belongs to my mother. I get to have it when I'm in K.L because she's decided that it's much easier to just use the driver and the company car.

Stylo Fashion Grand Prix 2014 Day 1 / HIAO PO MODE, ON!

Mercedes-Benz Stylo Fashion Grand Prix (or as I prefer to call it, 'F1 Fashion Week') opened on Monday with 'A Stylish Slumber Featuring Men and...more Men'.

Well, this certainly went some way toward picking up my mood and banishing the blues.

All the repressed and sexually-frustrated Datins and hiao pos (including yours truly) of K.L approve.

Stressed But Well Dressed

Has it only been four days since I arrived in Kuala Lumpur?

Between then and now I feel like an eternity has spanned, or rather, the distress and trials of the past week have borne on my shoulders, weighing me down like the proverbial celestial sphere condemned to Atlas.

Today is a new day and a new week. I'm restoring to factory settings, wiping all the bugs from and clearing all the bad memories from my hard drive. Now begins a busy week packed with social events---Malaysian Grand Prix, F1 parties, Zouk 10 year anniversary, a Hennessey X.O meet and greet, Mercedes-Benz Stylo Grand Prix (aka F1 fashion week),  and a very exciting meeting with one of my favourite glossy magazines.

Here's to finishing with a flourish the last week of March. March on.

It's no exaggeration when I say that my zeitgeist de semaine is 'Stressed But Well Dressed'.

Zara 'Stressed but well dressed' clutch / Saint Laurent Arty ring / Mango mint skinnies / House of Eight mesh top / Chanel 'Brick' inspired iPhone case from a little stall in Times Square / Gucci heels / Chanel nail vernis '559 Frenzy'

There's nothing so soothing for the nerves as pastel colours.

From these pictures it is evident that I am in desperate need of---

a) the perfect white heels to compliment all my pastels and Spring wardrobe
b) a steam cleaner because every crease and wrinkle I go over with an iron is minutes of my life I will never get back.
c) a dye job. My once jet-black hair has faded from bleach abuse and sun damage. In 2012 I bleached my hair a heroic six times in six months. Since then my hair has never quite been the same.

That two tone hair, oh my God, I can't deal with it.

I swear it's not nearly as bad in person, you can barely tell, but under the unforgiving tropical light all things are magnified.

Thank you Nana xiao mei mei for patiently taking hundreds of photos for me until we got the right ones. Yes, hundreds. Asians at work haha. I am so happy to have a little sister who is every bit the emotional, vain, big-hearted, and loving Leo that I am. Nana! Please remember and take heed of my advice. This is the right time, I know you can do it. I'm looking forward to seeing much much much more of you, if you know what I mean. So...be brave! Jia you!

'Drench Your Palette In Gold' with Magnum

I just woke up with the slightest remnants of yesterday's pervasive headache. I think it could have been from drinking a double espresso on an empty stomach and not having eaten all day---I'm determined to lose a ridiculous but totally necessary amount of weight, you'll agree when you see from the following photos how fat I am now---but I would prefer to think that my headache had less to do with being a dehydrated empty husk of a person and more to do with giddying excitement and nerves for attempting to cook chocolate desserts drenched in gold with Magnum.

On A Cloudy Day, Bangsar

People ask me what it means to be 'Posh, Broke, & Bored'. I suppose a good answer to that would be 'to live a champagne lifestyle on lemonade budget'. Shopping wise, On A Cloudy Day has my sartorial needs sorted. Whenever I'm in Kuala Lumpur I pop down to my friend Ash's boutique to get my fix of designer and designer-inspired clothes, accessories, and shoes at a mere fraction of the price.

Tiramisu at Alexis, Bangsar

For as long as I could remember, ever since I was a young girl up till when I moved to London when I was 19 I had the same birthday cake every year. I would be presented with a deliciously decadent monster of what is definitely the best tiramisu in Kuala Lumpur, from Alexis in Bangsar.

Cognac and coffee soaked lady fingers layered with the fluffiest mascarpone cream topped with sweet, crunchy, caramelised pecans, served with a dreamy puddle of strawberry sauce...it tastes like the things my teenage dreams are made of.

Even now, after all these years, I have to have my fix whenever I'm back in K.L. One bite and I am transported back to the excitement of my birthday, when the box would make it's appearance, that first glorious bite, stashing it in the fridge and eating my way down to the last slice. It would take me almost two weeks to eat the whole thing by myself---when it comes to this tiramisu, I don't share---and somehow even after a week it tastes as amazing as the first, fresh, bite. If anything it gets better when it's been in the fridge for a while.

It's four in the morning and typing this has made me so hungry that I've made Sheena-chan cook Maggi Mee for us. This is the catalyst for cellulite. Nevermind, I have Photoshop. I hear the Liquify diet does wonders.

To Market, To Market, To Buy A Fat Pig...

...said 'fat pig' could very well be me, if my medical report results are anything to go by. On Monday I endured the indignity of a comprehensive medical examination at Prince Court hospital, the likes of which involve running on a treadmill (I lasted 9 minutes and 31 seconds before the test was stopped 'because of fatigue') and simulating a fireman putting out a fire by blowing in a pipe (I failed spectacularly). Anyway...I got the results and according to my report I'm fat. There's no other way around it, the doctor says I need to lose 11kg and gain 3 kg of muscle. My BMI is 'normal' but dangerously close to the 'overweight' range. My body fat percentage is 'morbidly obese' and my cholesterol has gone from 'below average' to 'above average'. But! On the positive side, my hearing is excellent.

Yesterday---the actual day of my birthday!---I dealt with my humiliating medical report results by...having dinner at a restaurant that specialises in everything pork. *shakes head* And the vicious circle perpetuates itself...

Une, Deux, Troika (Sky Dining at Troika)

This morning, I woke up on a mattress in the middle of my childhood bedroom, with Nana curled up like a cat beside me and Michiekins happily snoring away on my bed above us. I also woke up a year older (and this time, at least marginally wiser) and to a flurry of birthday greetings; text messages, Whatsapp messages, Facebook posts, and adorkably cute voice notes from Sukins that I want to make my ringtone. Thank you everyone for you for your well wishes!

My 'official' birthday party was last Saturday (I'm still editing the photos!) but yesterday the terrible trio got together for a day at the spa and dinner in the sky. Which is how my impromptu slumber party with Nana and Michiekins came to be; I literally sent them home only for them to pick up an overnight bag, ignoring their other half's pleas to "Stay home and sayang me" hahaha sorry it's my birthday.

Sage at The Gardens

Pet peeves, anyone? Some of mine are; prehistorically-slow internet connection,  delayed flights, people with the audacity to lie repeatedly to your face and to themselves (and worse, think you're as stupid as them to believe their poor excuses), and Photoshop unexpectedly quitting every time I try to save (oh, the irony!). All of which happened in 24 hours, so needless to say I had to keep my blood pressure normal by indulging myself in a few of my favourite things. Good company, good food, and a good dress.

Louis Vuitton handbag (I forgot exactly what it's called) and dress, stolen appropriated from mummy's wardrobe.

Last night mummy, my camera-shy brother, his new girlfriend, and I had dinner at one of my favourites  in K.L, the ever low-key and unassuming but excellent Sage at The Gardens, Mid Valley.

For starters, mummy had capellini pasta with trio of seafood and seven chilli pepper, lil brother had gruyere cheese souffle with cream bechamel sauce, and his girlfriend ML demonstrated good taste by ordering the same starter as me (haha), seared foie gras with dark grapes and red wine reduction.

The foie gras melted on my tongue like a dream, the sweet dark grapes were the perfect foil to the richness of the liver, and the wine sauce was mopped up with pieces of bread.

Brother drowning his creme souffle with bechamel sauce, just to be doubly sure it's dead.

For mains, mummy had herb crusted halibut with rice wine and hakame broth and ML had the most fearsome looking lamb shank with provencale vegetables. Brother and I both plumped for wasabi crusted wagyu cheek with a side of flat beans and carrot puree.

It was of course divine. I won't bother insulting it by trying to describe the taste with meager words.
Just do yourself a favour, go down to Sage and order it for yourself.

The empty plate speaks for itself.

For pudding I was slightly let-down by the wasabi souffle with milk ice-cream which tasted bland, like air that once dreamt of wasabi although the ice-cream was gloriously creamy. ML kept it simple with Earl Grey ice-cream, brother's ginger and lime creme brulee was deliciously fiery, and mummy found a winner in the ever dependable Belgian dark chocolate fondant with Earl Grey tea ice-cream.

Dinner ended predictably with petit fours and tea, just how I like it to. I wanted a glass of champagne but mummy forbade it because I was the designated driver. Has one, just one, glass ever done anyone wrong? Sigh. Please tell her that.

Sartorially speaking, I'm somewhat lazy and spend most of my time inadvertently dressed like an old lady (maxi skirts and unintentionally clashing prints will do that). Whatever energy I have is invested in drawing and bergolek-golek so when I do 'dress nice', attention must be paid. This doesn't happen often.

I love that this dress is too tight in the chest, binding and minimizing my bust. Ironically when the zip is undone to just above my rib cage it has the opposite effect, creating the "Look ma, no hands!" corset effect that will no doubt set tongues wagging in speculation of the authenticity of my female assets. Heaven forbid I burden you with that.

It's nearly midnight and I'm going to eat some durians in my room to annoy my mother (she hates the smell) and read Thick Face, Black Heart. Trust no b*tch, fear no man.

xx

Mercedes-Benz Stylo Fashion Grand Prix: The Voodoo Ball, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Awards Gala, & Aloft Grand Opening

Last Thursday, the 5th & final evening of Mercedes-Benz Stylo Fashion Grand Prix was also the night of the  Mercedes-Benz Stylo Fashion Awards Gala and the launch of Aloft K.L Sentral. Dubbed 'The Voodoo Ball', the theme du nuit was gothic.
Although most of the guests were more glamourous than ghostly, the dramatic fashion presentation by Jovian Mandagie and the staggering presence of the MC more than made up for the lack of the macabre.

Not very long ago the gothic dress code would have truly been up my street, but as I've softened my 'look' of late, my ensemble that night was more like a walk down memory lane. Now you're just somebody that I used to know.

In true Chinese style, the opening ceremony of the new Aloft K.L Sentral featured a lion dance.

Z & M.

Waiting for the show to start. Forget the performers and their disco sticks, the whole time I couldn't take my eyes off Kai Schlickum (Vice President of Sales & Marketing of Mercedes Benz Malaysia) who was sitting right across me in the front row. I'm probably biased because he's exactly my type---at least 10 years older, tall, salt & pepper hair, blue eyes---but, still...the man is handsome. His wife is a lucky woman.

The MC was a vision, towering on stilts yet walking with the ease & deliberate grace of...Jack Skellington. Who I'm certain was her inspiration that night.

Models who complain that walking in heels is difficult, please watch this woman and learn.

The show opened with La Formela from Czech Republic who showcased silky, printed ensembles not unlike the pyjama trend that took S/S'12 by storm. It all looks terribly comfortable, and I think the loose, slouchy cuts would be especially suited to tropical Malaysian weather. Freezing cold London, not so much.

Followed by Mercedes-Benz Stylo Fashion Awards Gala, of which a very unfortunate jacket design with what looked like dandruff on the shoulders rendered me so distracted that I forgot to take any pictures.

Right after, a presentation of emerging young designers (all students from local fashion schools) who used recycled materials to create unexpected designs.

Tan Chun Yong's creation, 2nd Runner-Up of Mercedes-Benz STYLO Emerging Designer of the Year 2013.

This was my favourite, by Kelvin Raw Yi Shuen. I wanted so badly for it to wing (haha) but it came first runner up of of Mercedes-Benz STYLO Emerging Designer of the Year 2013. Still a huge achievement though! And look, there's Kai Schlickum looking dapper even without his jacket.

Arisa and her creation. I once shot Arisa for Kiss Me's Facebook competition, I had no idea she was a designer as well, I only thought she was a model. So many talents, so little time!

Melinda Looi's fashion presentation put the show back on track to the gothic theme of the night.

Then the lights went out for Jovian Mandagie's collection.

A booming voiceover. Hooded figures in black bearing lanterns and music instruments glided down the catwalk. An orchestra and choir of hooded musicians accompanying the dramatic soundtrack with the violin, cello, chants, and choruses.

A singer dressed in Jovian Mandagie pierced the deep, rumbling music with her high, clear soprano as models took slow steps down the catwalk, pausing ever so often, all the better to show off Mandagie's elaborate gowns and headpieces festooned in lace, spikes, feathers, and snakes.

I recognized a few similiar elements in this collection to the one he did for the Magnum Chocolatier Collection earlier this month. The fringing in the dresses, the colour scheme, the way the silk trains of the gowns billowed as the models walked.

The only way Jovian Mandagie could top this is with real snakes in the headdresses.

Of course he won Mercedes-Benz Stylo 'Designer of The Year 2013'. It's the year of the snake, and clearly the serpent boded well for Jovian Mandagie. His lucky animal this year.

He led his models out to the catwalk for the grand parade. The other designers and the competing design students followed suit with their models and designs.

Everyone stands with bated breath as the winner of the award 'Emerging Designer of the Year 2013' is announced...

...and it goes to Phuna Boon Yi...!

I'm loving the height difference, it's so adorable & endearing, like an elder sibling protecting their younger!

The grand exit.

While the designers were being interviewed we made our way to the dessert table...

...and encountered living, flesh-and-blood table props! This lady with skewers of cake in her hair kept so still, that in the red light she almost looked like a mannequin. "What a realistic-looking decapitated head" I thought, then she turned and made me jump. She laughed, and when I reached to the plate for a cake she said "Take one from my hair!" Anything to lighten her load...!

We headed to the afterparty upstairs and were greeted by yet another infinity pool with a view of the city skyline. Is this a recurring theme in my life? Is the universe telling me something? Certainly. Time to build an infinity pool.

Michiekins looking gothic, for once...! I like. (Dark) soul sisters.
