My comprehensive skincare collection and day routine, night routine; and weekly routine for getting rid of sebaceous filaments, blackheads, whiteheads etc.

THEY SAY IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD.
I SAY IT TAKES A VILLAGE-FUL OF PRODUCT TO CULTIVATE GOOD SKIN.
...at least, for an urbanite past the threshold of blissful ignorance ie. a simpler time when one's bleakest hour was Geri leaving the Spice Girls (wow, my age is showing). Fact is, it wasn't just turning 30 that set me off on my very own episode of Hoarders: Skincare Edition but also that I needed a nice new habit ever since I kicked a bad one. Swapping smoking for skincare, I guess you could call it a 'skin-win' situation? Here is my current arsenal; some of it old favourites and others recent additions I've been trying out for just over a month.
SKIN TYPE: NORMAL. MEDIUM TONED. AGED 30 •

The entirety of my skincare collection - save for a couple of new products that just arrived.
This photo is for illustrative purposes only - I don't leave my products out on the counter. My lotions and potions are stashed in the cabinet and arranged on different shelves according to routine ie. a 'day' shelf, a 'night' shelf' etc. for easy reach. Before I take you through my skincare routines and beauty products I should mention that my skin type is mostly Normal. I have what you'd call 'good skin' - that is, a clear complexion with small pores and no allergies or sensitivities, apart from the monthly spot and sometimes, mild sebaceous filaments.

DAYTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE
• LIGHTWEIGHT PRODUCTS WITH A HIGH SPF •

I like to start the day with a BHA - Beta Hydroxy Acid - cleanser (while I have Normal skin, BHA cleansers are especially effective for oily and acne-prone skin). My day cleanser, the *takes a deep breath* Super Facialist by Una Brennan Salicylic Acid Anti Blemish Purifying Cleansing Wash is a lightweight, refreshing foaming gel infused with elderflower that doesn't leave a sticky residue. It's important for my morning products to be light, as the build up from the day's makeup and pollution can really add layers to the face.

For this reason, Kiehl's Ultra Facial Oil-Free Toner and Ultra Facial Oil-Free Gel Cream strikes the right balance for uncongested skin.

I apply the Harnn White Mulberry Skin Perfector Brightening Serum before moisturiser (all the way down my neck to my décolletage) and Harnn White Mulberry Skin Perfector SPF 40++ after moisturiser. I got the Harnn skincare range from one of their spas when I was in Bangkok, but you can shop the entire range online here (they ship internationally).

I alternate my daytime cleanser, daytime toner, and moisturiser with the Harnn White Mulberry range (above). I really enjoy how the Brightening Face Wash gives a squeaky clean feeling without drying out the skin. Whichever products I use in the morning, there has to be a purifying cleanser (preferably with BHA), a non-sticky; lightweight toner and moisturiser, and a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF30 - even in winter.

NIGHTTIME SKINCARE ROUTINE
• TAKE IT ALL OFF...THEN PUT IT ALL BACK ON •

I remove my makeup with cotton pads and Bioderma micellar water - for a High Street version, Garnier's pocket-friendly version does the job - to prep my skin for cleansing. Always double cleanse, especially if you wear makeup! I learn this the hard way from a dermatologist who had to extract whiteheads from my hairline (where I like to contour with bronzer).

For my second cleanse, I alternate between NIP+FAB Glycolic Fix X-treme Pads and NIP+FAB Glycolic Fix Cleanser. The AHA - Alpha Hydroxy Acid - in both cleansers are great for dry skin because of their humectant properties (meaning they hold moisture), making Glycolic cleansers especially suitable for if you sleep in drying conditions ie. air-conditioning and central heating.

Of the many facial toners I've tried, rosewater has to be my favourite for the scent (incidentally, rosewater sprays are great for setting makeup). I use the Botanics 100% Organic Rosewater Toning Spritz from Boot's own brand, followed by their All Bright Radiance Concentrate Serum. Unlike my daytime serum which is creamy, the Botanics serum is water-based and almost weightless making it ideal to layer on top of. Pat into skin with fingertips, never rub.

My current eye cream is the La Roche-Posay Dark Circle Corrector (again pat and dab, never rub especially on under eye skin which is the thinnest and most delicate) which is followed by my moisturiser. I use the same moisturiser night and day, with one difference - at night I seal in all that juicy goodness with a facial oil.

I'm loving the Botanics Facial Oil as a cheap and cheerful yet effective choice. Apparently, so does the nation because it never seems to be in stock online and only appears sporadically in Boots. Last I checked, a month ago, the shelves were full so if you see the Botanics Facial Oil in Boots do grab one to try before they disappear again!

WEEKLY ROUTINE - HOW I CONTROL MY SEBACEOUS FILAMENTS
• OUT, DAMNED SPOT! •

Sebaceous filaments are tiny bumps often mistaken for whiteheads and blackheads, but are not blocked pores, rather, a build up of the skin's natural sebums. You can never truly get rid of sebaceous filaments (buggers keep respawning) nor should you force them out with pore strips but you can reduce them with this routine:

1. Massage NIP+FAB Glycolic Scrub Fix gently into skin for 2-3 minutes to loosen up dead cells. Note, AHAs cause photosensitivity, so it's important to use AHA products only at night. Skip this step if using this routine in the day.

2. Apply a layer of BHA cleanser - Super Facialist by Una Brennan Salicylic Acid Anti Blemish Purifying Cleansing Wash - to the face and leave on for 25 minutes.

3. Without washing off the cleanser, I apply a layer of L'Oreal Pure Clay Detox Mask to draw out impurities. I wait 15 minutes then wash off the lot with warm water.

4. I apply a layer of Fresh 'Seaberry' Cleansing Oil and leave it on for 15 minutes. The oil helps draw the clutter in my pores to the surface - charming!

5. I massage my face (gently!) for 2-3 minutes. The oil massage draws out the sebum and build up that causes the sebaceous filaments - clearing my pores and reducing their appearance naturally and gently, without the harsh and irreversible damage of nose pore strips!

6. After the massage, I rinse off the cleansing oil and moisturise with the Harnn White Mulberry Overnight Mask, or if it's day time, a sheet mask followed by moisturiser and sunscreen.

I do this once a week to reduce the appearance of sebaceous filaments and keep blackheads /whiteheads at bay.
