CONSERVATORY CHIC AT BOTANICA + CO, BANGSAR SOUTH

Of all the erroneous assumptions my Western friends make about me, the one that most defies logic is that I should adore heat and humidity or at the very least be accustomed to it. Let me break it down for you - One: Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, Two: By that reasoning, why do you gwai los complain about the cold in winter? Three: Malaysians drive their air-conditioned cars to air-conditioned offices then to air-conditioned watering holes and finally back to their air-conditioned homes. So no, my experience of the searing tropics is limited to the three and a half minutes the valet makes me wait for my car, and my love for all things tropical is best appreciate in the chilly confines of an air-conditioned space. It's the only way to admire palms and fronds without being eaten by Aedes mosquitos, really...

So when I got wind (like an air-con breeze, haha) of a fresh botanics-inspired restaurant arrival housed in an air-conditioned greenhouse, I made my way to the new-ish township of Bangsar South in search of Botanica + Co.

The menu is a medley of colourful salads, international sandwiches with French, Australian, and Korean ingredients, brunch favourites like shashouka and buttermilk pancakes, and of course Malaysian classics such as rendang and laksa with a twist (duck rendang and crayfish laksa, anyone?). Botanica + Co's offerings are produce-driven with imported quality ingredients as well as fresh local produce sourced daily. This is reflected in the quality of the food and not so much in the prices - mains are in the RM30 - RM40 price range which is typical of 'smart-casual' cafés in Kuala Lumpur.

Michiekins had the Asian BBQ Chicken Salad (above) - soy ginger grilled chicken, baby Romaine lettuce, basil, mandarin orange, cashew nuts & vermicelli tossed in a fragrant lemongrass & chili dressing; while I plumped for Sam’s Crab & Crayfish Laksa (below) - Chef Sam's secret recipe with the unusual additions of crayfish, tiger prawns, and quail eggs. We washed down our surprisingly hearty and very generous portions with freshly squeezed orange juice and pandan and lime soda.

Next door is Botanica Deli (left), a deceptively roomy space that seats 58. The food at the deli has the same dedication to quality ingredients as the restaurant, but with more affordable prices as their menu caters to the takeaway crowd. While the deli is casual, cute, and quirky I prefer the verdant tranquility of Botanica + Co. I wish I could've grabbed one of the two coveted corner seats beneath the banana trees (which I imagine is prime Instagram real estate) but Michiekins and I were happy enough to lunch beneath the stately Ficus trees. Definitely a destination for nature-loving foodies who love their creature comforts, in other words, most Malaysians.
