Down In New Orleans - Ninth Ward London

July 02, 2015

Gettin' down in the dirty South with some seriously good Cajun grub at London's new New Orleans restaurant, Ninth Ward

Let me tell you summin' about this banging new place - Ninth Ward is as authentic as it comes. Granted, my knowledge of New Orleans is limited to The Princess And The Frog (and oh, what a movie! Never has a Disney film made me so desperately want to visit a city) but with decor like a voodoo cabinet, buttermilk chicken and Slap Ya Mama wings on the menu, and cocktails with names like Titos Voodoo and The Great Fire of 1788  - shit, son, this is a real N'aaawlins experience! That it was a real scorcher of a Tuesday when I popped down to Farringdon for the soft launch of Ninth Ward helped, though the blissful chill of the air con was a Godsend, all the better for knocking back dem Bloody Muddy Cajuns!

Henry and I ordered quite the platter; a crayfish plate, Slap Ya Mama wings, fried pickles and burnt courgettes from the vegetarian 'Hippies' menu, shoestring fries and sweet potato fries. All of it absolutely delicious. Be warned - there is no elegant nor lady like way to eat the wings and the crayfish platter. You gotta just get stuck in, use your fingers, Suck da head, squeeze da tip (the N'awlins way to eat crayfish, and the best), then pop downstairs to the cahbin (just pass another Voodoo cabinet) to wash your hands (and possibly face).

...then wash it all down with a beer (take your pick from their 15 draught lines - Henry had a Cloudwater and Weird Beard) or cocktail (I highly encourage the Louisiana to Georgia; a New Orleans mint julep with a bourbon and peach twist, shaken and served straight up in a julep tin). What else can I say about Ninth Ward that these photos don't already tell you? It's a gorgeous yet casual place filled with authentic bits n' bobs at every turn - the sort you can lose hours in while getting transported to New Orleans, with all the charm and ease of the South. I can't recommend it enough - just get yourself down to Ninth Ward and see fo' yourself, and bring ya mom'n'em too! You can find Ninth Ward London at 99-101 Farringdon Road, London EC1R 3BN. x

**I was invited to review Ninth Ward, but hot damn, you can be hella sure I'll be back with my terrible faux N'awlins accent.

This looks like a fun place! Nothing can compare to the real feel of New Orleans (such an amazing place, I miss it there!), but the food does look pretty authentic and delicious! I'm always a fine of your food pictures! *drool*

Though....did they SERIOUSLY name the wings "slap your mama"? That makes me cringe....and kinda sad too. Terrible name choice.

  10. Rachel I've never been to New Orleans, but I'd love too!

Maybe 'Slap Your Mama' meant a cheeky, friendly slap on the bottom? That's what I thought it was - I'm always playfully smacking my mum with my handbag (and hair, but that's usually by accident) x

  13. You should put New Orleans on your travel list, I think you'll love it there. Great food, history and mysticism, street music, and my favorite part: the cemeteries!
