Destination: Helsinki

June 27, 2015

This time next week I'll be wriggling with anticipation for one more sleep before my trip to Helsinki! Can I get a Hel Yeah?

I'm staying in Helsinki for 3 nights to explore the culture, art and design scene; with a bit of maritime history and architecture, but mostly to compare one of Europe's hipster capitals to London, and believe me, I know a hipster when I see one - I've lived in Shoreditch for nearly 7 years. Bring on the Scandic-indifference and ironic facial hair - my Helsinki Card is ready.

Photo sources: 1, 4, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8.

I haven't yet worked out an itinerary for Helsinki, but I've made a note of museums, restaurants, and attractions I want to visit...

Design wise; I'd be a fool to miss the Marimekko factory outlet, and I'll be wandering about Korjaamo Culture FactoryCable Factory, and the Design District to get a proper feel for the creative scene. There are also museums on my list; the Ateneum, Design Museum (I'm especially looking forward to the Anthology of Finnish Fashion exhibit)Kiasma Museum of Contemporary ArtSinebrychoff Art Museum, and the Amos Anderson Art Museum

Henry and I are staying at Klaus K, a design hotel in the heart of Helsinki. I'm really looking forward to the hotel breakfasts - one: locals are known to frequent (that's how good it reportedly is) and two: I'm always to busy to sit down and eat breakfast - it's a real luxury I only have the time for when I'm on holiday. Besides loading up on carbs for breakfast at the hotel, I'll be getting my grub on at Story, Moko Market & Café Punavuori, The Abattoir, and Skiffer. I'll be needing all the energy for these attractions - I plan to cross the sea in a ferry to Soumenlinna to see the UNESCO world heritage maritime fortress, Helsinki Zoo, and if we can spare the time I'd love to fire some guns at Helsinki Shooting Club (I acquired quite the taste for it in Riga).

Will three to four days be enough to get a feel for the spirit of Helsinki? To be fair, the sun will be partying 'till midnight -  I hear the very long days lending a certain sort of restlessness to all who have the privilege to visit Helsinki in the summer. If Jussi Helsten's stunning photos series Helsinki 365 for  Visit Helsinki (his stunning snaps are what illustrate this blog post - most of these photos are from his Helsinki 365 project) are any indication then my three nights in Helsinki will barely scratch the surface! So now I ask, have you been to Helsinki? Do you have any recommendations and tips for me; where to go, what to eat and see? Please, tell me! x
