'Flâneur Forever': Hermès Wanderland at Saatchi Gallery

April 10, 2015

What is more quintessentially London than the classic image of a dandy, impeccable in smoking slippers and cane, peacocking along Hyde Park with no greater pursuit in mind than that of the pleasures of a voyeuristic city stroll? His Parisian counterpart, le flâneur, is the central theme of the latest Hermès campaign ‘Flâneur Forever’, the whimsical spirit of which is celebrated at Hermès Wanderland — an immersive and surrealistic exhibition at Saatchi Gallery

8 artists and set designer Hubert le Gall transformed the gallery into the joyous, fantastical dream world of the flâneur. A topsy-turvy vision of Paris is presented in 11 rooms — a Russian princess’s apartment, the Cafe of Lost Objects, a haunted room — in which visitors were invited to be immersed and delighted by, becoming flâneurs themselves. I was especially taken by the French shopping gallery in which an elephant crushes porcelain plates (a twist on the ‘Bull in a china shop’) and a gorgeous Cavalier King Charles Spaniel whipped around a corner, leather lead (in Hermès orange, bien sur) trailing behind.

Isn't serendipity a wonderful thing? Henry, who had no idea we were going to an Hermès exhibition, inadvertently dressed in an ensemble that brought to my mind the 'Equestrian Chic' Hermès is so renowned for.

Luxury is the refinement of a silk shirt worn with the ease of cotton. Following that train of thought, should I use spray paint to decorate my Hèrmes Birkin or risk a Kanye-sized monstrosity?

The limited edition Hèrmes Leica M9-P: a collaboration of two great houses renown for craftsmanship. What I would give...

Puppy love at first sight. My favourite breed of dog is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel - gift me a puppy and I'm yours forever.

“Flânerie, that wonderfully liberating art of urban wandering, is second nature to Hermès, one could even say our most profound nature” -- Pierre-Alexis Dumas, Hèrmes artistic director.

“The journey through Wanderland draws its coherence from two intrinsic elements of la flânerie: dreaming and freedom of spirit” -- Bruno Gaudichon, curator of La Piscine-Musée d'Art et d'Industrie in Roubaix, who was commissioned to create the exhibition.

The only other Hermès & Saatchi collaboration I could compare Hèrmes Wanderland to is Festival des Métiers in which I rendèzvous-ed with the craftspeople. While Festival des Métiers focused on the incredible skill, meticulousness, and attention to detail of this great French house, Hèrmes Wanderland is decidedly tongue in cheek (tongue in chic) and a celebration of the quirky, the humorous, and the strange. Whether you are a fan of Hèrmes or just looking for some LOLs, I'd recommend a visit to Hèrmes Wanderland, but make haste! The exhibition will only be London till May when they pack up for the next leg of their European tour.
