Bermondsey Beckons: José

January 10, 2014
Eager to eat my way through Bermondsey Street before I give up my artist's studio (that's a story for another time) I had lunch yesterday at José, the sister restaurant of Pizarro

José came highly recommended---now this is what Twitter is for!---plus Senor Pizarro himself was so lovely and friendly on Twitter, how could I not pop in for some tapas? Besides, I love tapas, it is essentially what I already do anyway, ordering several starters instead of a main.

As I did at Pizarro, I ordered three things (and again, it came to under £30) for lunch.

Mussels. The sauce was a little too salty to drink directly from the bowl, but I added some olive oil,  moped it up with bread, and it was perfect.

Calamari.

And these prawns, one of their best-sellers, that blew me away...

Beautifully cooked in chilli oil and garlic...I sucked the juices and brains out of the heads, as one should do, devoured the prawns, and wiped up the rest of the sauces with bread. Oh God why am I posting these photos now when I'm starving and waiting for delivery? Torture.

I was sent some complimentary slices of jamon, thank you!

Beautiful corpses.

And an espresso to fight the food coma. Although everything was filling yet not 'heavy' and seemed that much healthier than the plates of cheesy pasta I sometimes eat myself into a stupor with.

I'm coming back for the prawns! I could quite happily eat three bowls of those with bread on the side.
